Across recent years, Benelux and Germany have seen summer spreads widen with strong solar penetration growth deepening the midday price dip and sharper evening peaks as plant ramp up to meet demand as solar falls away. Heat waves across Europe exacerbated this effect with an increase in cooling demand. GB remains a winter-led spread story, with tight margins and wind driving volatility; this summer’s persistently low wind has kept spreads relatively flat. The growth in spreads is boosting investor interest in NWE, helped by still-unsaturated ancillary markets.
