EU swings behind blue hydrogen to support scaling

Headline hydrogen (H2) targets across Europe have focused on green hydrogen to date. But the chart shows the challenges of trying to scale H2 via electrolysers alone, given the large current cost gap between green & blue H2.

Incremental demand from the 40 GW EU + 5GW UK electrolyser targets is also likely to increase power demand by around 5% by 2030 (similar to the impact of EVs). Yet the green hydrogen produced falls well short of what is required to kick start decarbonisation of hard to electrify areas of the industry, heat & heavy transport sectors.

This is behind the motion adopted this week by the European Parliament’s climate committee in support of the transition role of blue hydrogen alongside green.
