Germany releases 1.9GW of lignite capacity from reserve amidst gas burn concerns

Following the closure of Germanys final 4GW of nuclear power capacity earlier in the year, Germany cabinet has confirmed the release of 1.9GW of lignite capacity from the reserve back into the market across Winter 23, in a last minute attempt to reduce gas consumption and avoid gas shortages in the event of a cold winter. Whilst gas storage remains at record highs for October (>97% full), Germany’s gas storage optimisers have warned that compliance with legally binding storage targets may be challenging even under a “normal” winter.
