Irish price shapes are shifting

The Irish power market is changing fast, both in supply mix and market arrangements. The normalised price shape above shows it clearly.

Peak prices in Ireland have flattened relative to 2019-21, in contrast to markets like Germany where peak pricing has sharpened. The Irish story reflects an unusually volatile period when data centre demand growth dwarfed supply side additions. Midday prices are also falling year on year as solar scales.

Why it matters for BESS?

Changing price shape is where this gets interesting for Irish batteries.

BESS traded wholesale volumes jumped after the SDP-02 reforms opened up wholesale access, with volumes tracking spreads as shown in the chart. DS3 remains the anchor revenue stream today, but market arrangement changes next year should see energy arbitrage grow as a share of the stack. We unpack that shift and what it means for returns here.

Volumes have since plateaued after the initial step up. But investor interest is broadening beyond the incumbent first movers to a wider set of players.

We have worked extensively in the IE market supporting in the Greenlink, Energia and multiple BESS transactions. To hear more about our Power service offering in the IE market, please reach out to Arshpreet Dhatt, Principal, arshpreet.dhatt@timera-energy.com
