Russian gas flows to Europe through Ukraine cease

Flows from Russia to Europe via Ukraine through the Sudzha interconnection point went to zero on the 1st January 2025. The reduction in flow has been anticipated in recent months despite pressure from Slovakia, and an option to ‘rebrand’ the transit gas as Azerbaijani being discussed, and ultimately rejected. The loss of Ukrainian flow amounts to approximately 15bcm/year of supply to Europe, which will be balanced by the competition for LNG with Asia (with Asian demand seeming more responsive to price in the recent Q4 rally). Some flow of Russian gas into Europe will remain through the TurkStream pipelines into Hungary.
